Belgian beer cocktail at the Belgian Comic Strip Center

A cocktail reception with Belgian beers will be another occasion for the SYSID 2012 participants to meet together at the Belgian Comic Strip Center, on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 19:00.

In 1989 this museum was established in a magnificent Art Nouveau building, designed at the beginning of the 20th century by the great Victor Horta. The building, inaugurated in 1906, originally served as a warehouse to textile baron Charles Waucquez. On the ground floor an area is devoted to the architecture and spirit of that age, a period (late 19th – early 20th century) which happens to coincide with the first tentative steps of the comic strip…

Symposium Banquet at Hotel Metropole

The symposium banquet will gather the duly registered SYSID 2012 participants and accompanying persons at a luxury Belgian hotel with a story, hotel Metropole, on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 18:30.

Inaugurated in 1895, it was originally an afterthought; built by a brewer's family as an addition to their café, intended to promote their selection of beers on the famous Place de Brouckère. The main entrance is all French Renaissance frivolity, leading to an Empire-style reception hall replete with gold stained-glass windows celebrating the city's art-nouveau heritage. Glittering with chandeliers, the sumptuous lobby retains many of its original features, and the rooms are a playful mix of art deco, art nouveau, and modern style.

Throughout its 112-year history, the Hotel Metropole has become part of the city's social, economical, political, and cultural life; welcoming such famous guests as Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Enrico Caruso, Arthur Rubinstein, the crew of the Challenger space shuttle, and many more.
